Italy issues second generation biometric passports Following the entry into force on 19 May 2010 of a decree on the Italian unified passport, the next generation passports will contain their owner's digital facial image and signature, as well as two fingerprints stored on a microchip. Only the police stations and headquarters are entitled to collect fingerprints. The fingerprints featured on the passport's chip can thus be sent for check to central police systems but they cannot be kept for longer than is necessary to conduct a preliminary investigation. read more...
