Iran Introduced 100,000-Rial Note The Persian Gulf country will print at least 150 million of the new notes and distribute them over three months, starting June 22, Bahmani was cited. The issuance of the notes won’t increase the inflation rate, he said. Bahmani said the new banknotes will be used in place of the "check-poul" a check-type document of at least 500,000 rials that Iranians can buy from banks to use in transactions requiring multiples of the current maximum-denomination banknote, 50,000 rials. read more ... |

China police bust huge counterfeit ring Police in central China have arrested four men suspected of forging 210 million yuan (31 million dollars) in fake bills in the nation's single biggest counterfeiting bust. South Africa recall pre-2005 200 Rand banknotes After 31st July 2010 it will only be possible to present pre-2005 R200 banknotes for exchange at South African Reserve Bank Branch. These notes remain legal tender, and there is no time limit on when such can be presented for exchange. The public is encouraged to rely on the post 2005 upgraded series R200 banknotes and retailers are obliged to accept them. read more ... |

Tampered bank notes are declared invalid The Bank of Thailand has declared the tampered 100-baht bank notes circulated mainly in the Northeast invalid. Users are also subject to prosecution by related laws, with life imprisonment as the maximum penalty. The tampered bank notes carrying a lèse majesté text claiming that fugitive ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is the reincarnation of King Taksin the Great with a pledge of allegiance have been widely circulated in the Northeast. RBA note scandal widens as Chavez joins list A Reserve Bank of Australia subsidiary paid for Vietnamese government officials to travel to Central America to meet representatives of Hugo Chavez's Venezuelan government to try to convince the socialist regime to use its polymer banknotes. Securency believed the Vietnamese officials stood a good chance of convincing their Venezuelan counterparts of the merits of polymer banknotes because of their shared left-wing political views. Italy issues second generation biometric passports Following the entry into force on 19 May 2010 of a decree on the Italian unified passport, the next generation passports will contain their owner's digital facial image and signature, as well as two fingerprints stored on a microchip. Only the police stations and headquarters are entitled to collect fingerprints. The fingerprints featured on the passport's chip can thus be sent for check to central police systems but they cannot be kept for longer than is necessary to conduct a preliminary investigation. read more... |

UK: Identity cards and National Identity Register to be scrapped The government plans for identity cards for British citizens to be scrapped within 100 days, it was announced.
